Specialty Print

One of the most interesting parts of my work is seeing how the design, material choices and production techniques add to people’s experience when interacting with the finished product. A card with a spot of soft-touch or the aggressive deboss of a bold name, and of course the stock, color palette and type choices, all affect how people feel when they hold the piece in their hand. As people’s experiences have become less tactile, physical qualities are becoming more meaningful.

My career began in commercial printing, where I learned the mechanics of print firsthand: separations, trapping, registration, specialty inks, varnishes, foil stamping, die cutting, embossing and debossing, thermography, stock, and finishing. That experience shaped the way I have approached design ever since. For me, production is not simply the last stage of a project. Materials, printing techniques, construction, and manufacturing possibilities can become part of the creative idea itself.
